I'd spent the following afternoon listening to a couple of podcasts on the front deck. My second beer for the day was just about gone, and my weekly dose of marginally believable stories was wrapping up. Whatever Holly and Tara had been doing, they were at least quiet about it.

Joe's unmistakable frame shambled toward me on the dock when I looked that direction. As he got close enough for me to make out the look on his face, I knew undertaking that kind of walk meant he was desperate.

“Bryce!” He sounded winded as you'd expect. “I need a favor!”

I hit pause on my phone and stood up. “I might be able to help, depending on what you need.”

A patch of sweat was already spreading across the center of his Hawaiian shirt. “I've got two more doses for you, and I need cash, fast.”

“I don't know, man. I don't mind loaning you a bit, but I think I'm good on that stuff.” I waved for him to step onto the deck. It was sounding too much like I was buying dope from him.

He collapsed into the chair I'd been sitting in. “Listen, the guy I get this from has one last batch, but I'm a couple-hundred short.”

I had the money, but it was always fun turning thumb-screws on people. “You might have to figure out how to get girls the old-fashioned way.”

He looked like his heart was ready to explode. “Hey, I need this stuff to get laid. Just look at me.”

“You could always settle down with one of the girls you turned.”

Joe finally calmed his breathing and cracked a grin. “Why?”

It was a fair enough point. “I'll tell you what, I'll front you the money, but I don't need anymore of that stuff. The two I've already got on my boat have just about killed me.”

He watched as I dug for my wallet. “Two-hundred is all I need. I'll get it back to you next payday.”

I counted out ten twenties and held them out for him. “You'd better. I've got slip fees to pay in a couple of weeks. Gotta have somewhere to park this boat.”

Joe took the money and dug two vials out of his breast pocket. “Thanks, man, and I want you to have these anyway. I'll still get you all the money back.”

“What the hell do I need them for?”

With a nod of his head up the dock, Joe forced me to look toward the bank. “Milfalicious over there is a good candidate.”

Sure enough, my neighbor Marina was heading right for us in the distance. I turned back to Joe and snatched the vials from his hand. “I like the way you think, but what about the second?”

“I don't know. Get creative.” He stood up, clearly sucking in his gut as Marina got closer. “I'd better run. Can't show up to buy my stock later than I already am.”

As soon as he was past Marina, who obviously wasn't willing to make so much as eye contact with him, Joe shot a dual thumbs-up at me.
